Byworth Boilers are aware that boiler users are increasingly suffering from rising fuel bills, and with this in mind the boiler manufacturer embarked on a 2 year project in conjunction with Leeds University. The brief was, by rigorous testing, to ascertain and prove the optimum configuration of shell, furnace, and tubes for maximum boiler efficiency and low emissions.
The project almost came to an early close when on testing the existing Byworth Yorkshireman range of boilers, it was found that efficiency results for this range were actually higher than previously claimed and better than similar boilers available. However, rather than resting on laurels, the company persevered with the research which has culminated in the launch of the Yorkshireman2 boiler range.
As someone with responsibility for the compressed air system, you will be expected to guarantee air at the right pressure and flow, but also at least cost. To do this there are two aspects: you need to produce and use compressed air as efficiently as possible. Disproportionate emphasis on efficient generation of compressed air in the compressor house, may lead to other factors such as the value of effective maintenance and user behaviour being overlooked. Compressed air systems rely on effective maintenance for reliability, safety and energy efficiency and compliance with legislation. All of these contribute to a cost-effective compressed air system.
Missing a maintenance service is a false economy, for compressors, ancillary equipment and the distribution piping connections. Effective maintenance not only saves energy it helps address the more critical issue of air supply reliability for processes. For most operations reliability of supply (whether this be pressure, volume or air purity) is paramount. Although energy efficiency receives wide coverage, reliability of supply has even greater business implications, e.g. a metal products manufacturer had paid little attention to its compressed air system, stating that it only represented 4% of the site energy costs. However if the supply failed then the cost of lost production of a number of critical processes dwarfed the energy costs, so improving the system should have been a priority and delivered energy benefits as an added bonus.

Many warehouses are now suffering the effects of heat, particularly in areas where mezzanine floors have been built. Also many pharmaceutical products now need to be stored at temperatures below 250C to comply with the requirements of the MHRA. Previously this temperature has only been properly achieved and maintained using expensive refrigeration-based air conditioning systems because simple ventilation systems are not able to match this standard. EcoCooling can now offer a balanced evaporatively-cooled ventilation scheme which can ensure full compliance.
18 EcoCoolers were installed in a large pharmaceutical warehouse in Orleans France. The coolers were linked to a common control system which monitors temperature at multiple levels in the warehouse. A combination of ventilation, evaporative cooling and air throughput are regulated by an integral control system to meet temperature criteria.
