Midland-ACS enhances its green credentials

Mid 32 UK manufacturer Midland-ACS as part of an ecology product drive has extended its water hydraulic valve range

With governments and organisations the world over pursuing ways to reduce emissions in power generation, one of the oldest but most favoured methods of generation is experiencing a resurgence as of late. Producing essentially no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions, and not significantly contributing to global warming through CO2, hydroelectric power at present supplies about 715,000 MW
or 19% of world electricity (16% in 2003), and more large dams are still being built, 10 of which will be in China, the worlds biggest hydroelectric power producer.

As part of their ongoing work on hydroelectric projects worldwide, UK manufacturer Midland-ACS has extended their range of Stainless Steel Water Hydraulic control valves for use on Hydro-Electric Power Plants.

INFOR AND BLUE DOT ADVANCE MOBILE ASSET MANAGEMENT FOR THE ENTERPRISE

Marty Osborne October 10, 2007 - Infor today announced availability of Infor EAM Advanced Mobile, an adaptable portable asset management solution that supports multiple applications from a single device.

The solution is delivered through partnership with Blue Dot Solutions, a leading provider of intuitive mobile and wireless computing solutions for asset intensive companies. Deployed in conjunction with Infor's family of EAM solutions, including Infor EAM Enterprise Edition, Infor EAM Business Edition, and Infor EAM MP2, Advanced Mobile enables organisations to seamlessly extend robust asset management capabilities to workers in the field.

"In many instances, entering collected data in an office computer isn't the most productive way to manage asset performance," said Marty Osborn, senior director of industry product management for Infor EAM.  "Advanced Mobile unleashes asset management from the desktop and puts it in the hands of the people who need it most. The ability to create new applications based on business-specific templates means that companies have a highly intuitive, configurable solution that can support their needs well into the future."

A sensible preventative maintenance program for centrifugal pumps

Centrifugal pumpsTRY TO INSTALL CONSTANT MONITORING. With proper instrumentation you can tell:

If the fluid in the stuffing box is about to change state and fail the mechanical seal. It could vaporize. It could solidify. It could crystallize. It could become viscous. It could build a film on the sliding surfaces and between the lapped faces. The differential pressure between the suction and the discharge can tell you how far you are operating the pump from its best efficiency point (BEP).

The suction pressure can tell you if cavitation is about to begin.Comparing flow to amperage can tell you if you need an impeller adjustment.Comparing flow to amperage can tell you if the wear rings need replacing. A probe in the bearing case or an infra red light can tell you if the bearing temperature is too high. A drop in capacity with no change in amperage consumption could tell you the open impeller needs adjusting.

X-Ray Power

X-RayAn X-ray camera using special optics and claimed to last longer than conventional equipment, could provide manufacturers with improved reliability when monitoring components on the production line.

The developers of the camera at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen claim the XEye can survive 10 years of X-ray bombardment. In addition, they said, the device, which is available in a range of sizes, is more robust and has a higher resolution than conventional cameras.

While no human could withstand the bombardment of X-rays 24 hours a day, seven days a week, industrial X-ray cameras have to endure those conditions to detect faulty components. The cameras must constantly scrutinise thousands of parts that glide past on the conveyor belt every day and search for dangerous faults, such as fine cracks in car wheels and air bubbles in metal castings.
