Join the Revolution in Professional Education

Dr Eric ParrThe East Lancashire Institute of Higher Education at Blackburn College (ELIHE) specialises in providing tailored Higher Education solutions. It offers qualifications at levels ranging from Higher National to Masters in a range of subjects including engineering, computing, construction, business and public sector studies. It can also develop programmes rapidly to meet specific sector or industry needs.

The institute is also market leader in delivering qualifications by a combination of accreditation of existing employer courses, on-site delivery, distance learning and/or short intensive courses. It has a long track record of delivering such

New handheld OTDRs are ideal for certifying fibre networks

The 33-960 Series of Micro OTDRs from IDEAL INDUSTRIESA new range of lightweight, rugged, handheld Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) is now available, which offers high measurement precision, fast data acquisition, ease-of-use and a variety of useful features.Increasing bandwidths in LAN and fibre optic cabling means that more in-depth testing and certification of networks is now required.

The 33-960 Series of Micro OTDRs from IDEAL INDUSTRIES are designed for the installation and troubleshooting of LAN, campus and WAN fibre networks. The combination of precise measurement, a one-button

Forces attracted to fuel savings.

CHP unit or main boiler roomMagnatech Fuel Conditioning Limited have recently completed a contract to install their  very powerful magnetic fuel conditioning units to all structural gas and oil burning equipment across five MOD bases in England. This was after research concluded that Magnatech was the most cost effective provider of this type of application.

The MOD have used this technology previously, when a number of  bases where equipped with  similar units, they calculated payback  within the year,  and now it is reported that  those units are continuing to save much more than their purchase price every year with no maintenance or running costs.  This figure is of course rising as fuel prices soar.

The History of Oil Analysis, or

oil condition sensorThe emergence of onboard sensor technology and usage is clearly at hand and ever expanding. Sensors represent a dynamic, long-term paradigm shift in the way oil is and will be analyzed. Tracing the history of oil analysis will help us understand how this came about and, perhaps, where it might lead.

In the beginning: The first serious inspection efforts were made in laboratories

Improving the life of hydraulic pumps, fans and blowers

ImageBy monitoring the vibrations from critical components inside a hydraulic pump, fan, blower or compressor, companies can improve their plant efficiencies, eliminate production downtime and increase the operating life and reliability of plant equipment, says Ian Taylor of Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES).Although the cost of a component inside a hydraulic pump, such as a rolling element bearing, rotor or fastener, is often very small compared to the total cost of the pump, the cost of production downtime and any consequential losses as a result of a component failure, are often significant.

For a processing plant, the typical cost of production downtime can equate to hundreds of thousands of pounds per day. Lost production in a paper mill, for example, equates to around
