Hansen gear units speed up Corus line

Hansen GearsSteelmakers Corus (Port Talbot) had been experiencing problems with their 42” edger drive system. The existing gear units were only providing 41 rpm when a drive speed of 59 rpm was required. Added to this, Corus’ Area Engineer Craig Dummer stated that “they were experiencing heavy vibration and ultimately, damage to the gear units”.

When the gears failed, this left Corus vulnerable to transfer bar loss, due to large section gaps in the rollers preventing delivery of the slabs to the down stream process.Hansen were called in and provided a new split drive gear system running the rollers at 59 rpm. Craig Dummer confirmed that “as the Hansen solution was to split the drive, utilising a matched pair of gearboxes, it is now far more economical than the originalconcept with a larger, single gearbox”.

Web-based service enables remote control of lighting at O2 Arena in Dublin

ewon ethernetBy installing an eWON industrial-grade Ethernet router – that offers secure, Internet-based remote control and diagnostics – with its lighting control systems, Architen Lighting is now able to remotely monitor and control customer lighting systems from anywhere in the world using a secure Broadband or wireless connection.

In a recent project, this technology was used by Architen to monitor and diagnose a lighting system it had installed at the new O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland. For this project, Architen sourced a single eWON Ethernet Gateway from M.A.C Solutions (UK) Ltd, which enables Architen to remotely monitor and control the lighting system. Architen engineers simply log on to a web page on the Internet using the eWON’s Talk2M (Talk To Machines) service, enabling them to turn on or change lighting effects from their own desktop, anywhere in the world.

Softstart launches 6.6kV digital softstarter range

PSBSoftstart UK has recently completed the development of a new range of Digital Medium Voltage Soft Starters, designed suitable for all types of induction motors, including synchronous and slip-ring types. The new Digitstart range covers both 3.3kV and 6.6kV in ratings from 60A to 700 Amps and features a completely new programming and monitoring regime.  Clearly starting motors in this category needs well considered programming and sensitive protection.

This is all provided by the 8.1ins full colour industrial PC and facilitates invaluable trend data such as previous starting data such as time to reach full speed, starting current characteristics, power absorbed and much more. All of this data is available at the central control point via ModBus or Ethernet so all start, run and diagnostic data is available to the operator.  Important optional features such as withdrawable line and bypass contactors, switch fuse disconnects and grounding switches have all been catered for and despite the comprehensive design, lead time is just 6 weeks as opposed to the several months experienced in the past.

ALPS Reduces Paperwork Mountain with Mainsaver

Alps Electric (Ireland) Limited has reported significant efficiency improvements in its engineering maintenance processes since the installation of Mainsaver CMMS from Spidex Software. Alps, which supplies automotive electronics to some of the biggest motor manufacturers in the world from its plant in Millstreet, Co. Cork, runs Mainsaver version 10.2 alongside the complementary web-based modules Spidex WMM and Spidex BI.

“Before we introduced Mainsaver, our day-to-day maintenance activities were generating large quantities of paperwork and the objective was to remove as much of that as possible,” says Maintenance Supervisor Michal Ostrykiewicz. “Our two biggest sources of paper were preventative maintenance job sheets and purchase requisitions, so that’s where we started.”

Artesis Delivers Wireless Communications with New Predictive Maintenance Solution

Motor Condition monitorArtesis, a leading supplier of intelligent predictive maintenance solutions, is pushing the boundaries of machine monitoring technology with its next generation solution. Delivering a range of powerful new functionality the Artesis MCM (Motor Condition Monitor) system now includes wireless technology for deployment in remote and inaccessible locations; fully automated condition assessment reports for even faster diagnostics; and the ability for engineers to easily and quickly customise the application for wider enterprise use.

Building on the success of the MCM system that has revolutionised automated fault diagnostics, Artesis has now integrated robust wireless technology, using intelligent GPRS modems, to allow the use of remote communications in condition monitoring. This allows cost-effective, easy installation of wireless monitoring stations at any site in remote, hazardous or inaccessible locations, while maintaining reliable and transparent access with centralised users via the Artesis communications server.

THE TEN QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK ABOUT your maintenance activity and physical assets

Maintenance Engineer As someone involved in the maintenance of a company’s assets, which may include   plant machinery, vehicles, long term hire equipment, stock and spares; you will be aware of the bewildering amount of  guidance on the subject. You may well be new to the subject having just been delegated to look at your company’s asset portfolio, or given this task in addition to other  operations work.

But what ever the situation this short check guide from MCP will help you look at the macro questions which effect correct maintenance activity and asset management.

  1. Are all the assets your computerised maintenance management system identified registered, and recorded, and how many are not being used?

  2. Do you know which assets present the greatest risk to your business in terms of:

Massive improvement for sensitive applications

BekokatUntil now, absolutely oil-free compressed air for sensitive applications could only be produced using relatively costly, often interconnected compressor- and filter-based technology.

In many cases not entirely re-liably. Now a newly developed and effective catalysis method and an extremely reliable residual-oil monitoring system point the way to the future of permanent high-quality compressed-air processing and moni-toring.
