Enerpac Cuts the Cord with Portable Cordless Bar Cutter

The Enerpac highly portable EBC-Series Cordless Bar Cutter quickly and easily slices through number 6 rebar or similar metal bar up to 20mm in diameter within seconds. The battery-powered cuter is designed for those who work in environments without access to on-site power. It is a convenient, and safe solution where external power is not available or where spark risk is a concern.

Portable, self-contained, and convenient
Whether cutting rebar for residential or commercial construction or cutting steel and aluminium bars (round, hexagonal, or square) in industrial applications, the cordless technology in the Enerpac Cordless Bar Cutter provides complete freedom of movement. Because it has self-contained power, no external power source is required. This makes the tool completely portable. Another convenient feature on the cutter is a 360-degree rotating head that allows the tool to either be positioned flat on a work surface, where metal bar can be fed through the blades from a comfortable working position, or rotated in any orientation needed to finish hard-to-reach cuts on the job site.

Another way Enerpac makes the tool convenient is by supplying it with two batteries and a charger so the operator can keep working when the first battery needs to be charged.

Precise Speed
The cutter offers a controlled, shear cut that is repeatable—unlike rotating cuts that tend to walk or slide on the bar—providing a uniform precise cut every time. Able to quickly cut through up to #6 rebar in 5 seconds, the Enerpac EBC-Series Cordless Bar Cutter has highly durable blades for thousands of cuts, with up to 125 cuts on a single charge.

Minimises Safety Risks
The Enerpac Cordless Bar Cutter is designed to minimise safety risks. Gas saws, angle grinders and cut-off tools are among the most popular solutions for cutting metal bar today, however, these tools are also the leading causes of injuries to an operator’s hand, arm or face. With the cordless bar cutter, the bar is held in place behind a protective guard, while a Trigger Guard helps prevent accidental activation. While the cutter’s controlled cutting action ensures there are no shooting sparks, exploding blades or exposure to high RPM cut-off wheels.

Hoist & Winch designs and manufactures outdoor-specification tandem-lifting hoist for Environment Agency

Hoist & Winch Ltd recently supplied a special tandem-lifting hoist system as part of improvements to Environment Agency flood defence assets at Taplow Weir on the Jubilee Relief Channel, an 11.6 km asset that reduces flood risk to 3,200 properties by diverting water from the River Thames when flows are high. The tandem hoist units lift 7 m long galvanised steel stop logs each weighing 2000 kg. These stop logs provide a temporary barrier to the Jubilee Relief Channel so that workers can perform maintenance on the hydraulically controlled sluice gates.

Working for a large water industry engineering contractor, Hoist & Winch designed the remote-controlled tandem-lifting system to bespoke Environment Agency requirements. In terms of operating concept, the tandem lifting hoist system raises and lowers the stop logs in a level position so they locate correctly in the guide rails without any misalignment.  At the heart of the system is a pair of Yale CPV 2500 kg swl (safe working load) single-fall, electric-powered chain hoists mounted in motor trolleys to provide fast and slow speed operation.

A Danfoss/Ikusi wireless remote control handset offers individual control of either hoist raise/lower motion for initial levelling of the load hooks prior to lifting operations. The wireless remote also provides dual tandem hoist control for the precise level positioning of the stop-log load during lifting and lowering.

In the event of power loss or activation of a raise/lower limit switch, special software ensures that the system fails safe and the load does not lift unevenly. As a point of note, mechanical linking of the hoist units ensures correct load-hook separation at all times, while both hoist units also feature audible and visual operating alarms.

From an electrical perspective, Hoist & Winch Ltd provided rugged, heavy-duty plug and socket connectors for ease of maintenance and installation. In addition, the company utilised a fully enclosed (outdoor specification) power-feed system to provide safe maximum hoist-hook coverage across the entire gantry. PVC covers provided added protection for the IP55 hoist enclosure and electrical control panels from outdoor weather conditions.

The criticality of the project and close proximity to water demanded closely monitored working practices, with very stringent planning of all activities and the provision of additional PPE, including life-preserver jackets. Site work was also subject to CDM regulations and required all site engineers to hold a valid CCNSG Safety Passport/CSCS competency certification.

Installation took place over a five-day period and involved a barge-mounted hydraulic crane. Testing of the complete system took place using a dynamic test load of 2.5t + 2.5t + 125% proof load. Additional repeated function tests involved the dynamic test load and actual stop-log load to prove system functionality and satisfy Environment Agency requirements. On completion, Hoist & Winch Ltd issued a LOLER Thorough Examination report and provided operator training for site personnel.

“The project to install the special tandem-lifting hoist system supports the Environment Agency’s annual maintenance programme, which is essential to ensure its flood defence assets remain in good working order,” says Andy Allen, Director of Hoist & Winch Ltd. “This type of tandem-lifting system would prove ideal for many other applications, such as lifting steel blast doors used in explosive/hazardous environments or handling valuable or delicate long loads in the manufacturing sector. Essentially any task that demands very precise and failsafe level lifting.”

HSE campaign highlights dangers from metalworking fluids

hse

  • Regulator warns of risks and need for health checks
  • HSE inspections to target use of specialist machines
  • Director of inspected firm says “don’t feel intimidated”

Businesses are being warned to make sure their staff are safe when working with metalworking fluids or coolants.

It’s a highly technical, specialist field applying precision engineering – but can also cause harm to the lungs and skin.

Past inspections by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have uncovered poor performance around control of metalworking fluids in businesses that use computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

Exposure to metalworking fluids – also referred to as ‘white water’ - can cause harm to lungs and skin through inhalation or direct contact with unprotected skin; particularly the hands, forearms and face.

Breathing in the mist generated by machining can lead to lung diseases such as occupational asthma and occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Manufacturing businesses should implement control measures and carry out health surveillance checks with occupational health professionals.

More about the campaign, and tips on how to keep workers safe, can be found here.

Machinists and metalworking fluid - Work Right to keep Britain safe

HSE inspector Fiona McGarry, said: “Lung problems and irritated skin don’t have to be associated with working with metalworking fluid if you take the right precautions.

“It is really important that control measures and fluid quality checks are in place to keep workers healthy. Health checks are essential to identify signs of ill-health early.”

To support the campaign, HSE will carry out inspections to look at how employers are ensuring workers are protected from exposure to fluid or mist generated by CNC machines across Great Britain.

Britain’s workplace regulator plans to carry out unannounced inspections between now and March 2024.

One business to have received such a visit was Nottingham-based engineering firm CNTL Ltd, earlier this year. Dane Rawson, the firm’s director, was apprehensive at first but soon saw the inspector was there to help.

He said: “I’m new to this side of the business, I haven’t dealt with a health and safety inspection before. At first, I was cautious, but it didn’t take long for the inspector to make us feel comfortable. She wasn’t trying to catch us out.”

The inspection showed the company had safe working practices in some areas, but it was asked to install local exhaust ventilation (LEV) on its CNC machines.

Dane and the team have noticed the difference: “We have several high-tech machines that constantly use pressurised coolant – it’s bound to create a mist.

“It was something we were aware of and had explored the option of installing LEVs, however as a result of HSE’s visit we wanted to follow their advice and action this sooner.

“We’ve noticed now that the smell of coolant is no longer there and air quality is much improved. It’s definitely a cleaner and safer environment to work in. The staff feel like we’ve done the right thing for them and know their wellbeing is a priority of ours.”

To reduce exposure, you need control measures in place. Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) should be fitted on CNC machines to carry away any harmful metalworking fluid mist, which is difficult to see in normal lighting.

Fluid quality should be regularly checked focusing on concentration, pH, bacteria and contaminants. Fluid systems can become highly contaminated with harmful bacteria.

Where there is exposure to fluid or mist, it is a legal requirement to carry out health surveillance even when preventative controls are in place. You will need to involve an occupational health professional and workers should be encouraged to report any health symptoms that occur.

Regular fluid checks are a part of CNTL’s weekly routine. They outsource to a company that carries out weekly coolant and dipslide checks.

The HSE inspection has had a positive impact on Dane, making him more interested in creating an environment that protects his team’s health as well as safety. He recently attended a trade fair in Germany, partly to understand the approach on the continent.

Dane’s message to any company that will be inspected is simple: “Don’t feel intimidated. They are only there to benefit you, your company and your staff.”
