The Common Assessment Standard from CHAS: What you need to know

The rollout of a new data-sharing agreement between the Common Assessment Standard providers means the benefits of qualifying for and specifying the scheme are greater than ever. CHAS, Managing Director Ian McKinnon explains more.

What is the Common Assessment Standard?

Since its launch in 2019, the Common Assessment Standard has fast become the construction industry’s gold standard for pre-qualification.

Fitness-for-purpose assessment EN/IEC 60079-17

What do you do when you find an item of electrical or non-electrical equipment in a Zoned area with no label or appropriate certificate?

Where no verifiable and/or correct certificate of conformity is available, EN/IEC 60079-17 states that a fitness-for-purpose assessment must be undertaken. Usually this will require a full assessment of the equipment including:

UKCA Ex Certification problems and solutions

Now that we have started to issue UKCA ‘Ex’ Certication, some of the problems facing equipment manufacturers are starting to be raised and addressed.

One of the first issues that was apparent was the use of ATEX (only) certified parts within or as part of a UKCA Certification, for example, ATEX Ex e terminals within and UKCA Ex e Junction Box. The solution to this is a ‘time limited certification!

Faster, better, safer – how digital products transform our work life

The modern employee is increasingly working in an agile environment. This also includes the workplace. Access to all relevant information and data while working from home, out of the office, inside the factory or on the factory premises is necessary.

In order to support tasks optimally and to be an innovation driver for customers, ECOM focuses on the continuous development of its portfolio consisting of mobile devices, accessories as well as digital products and services. Employees are supported and effectively secured by the offered products, while companies save time and resources thanks to an individually tailored mobile worker concept from a single source.

ROTRONIC ATEX Certified Humidity and Temperature Sensors

The ROTRONIC Intrinsically Safe HygroFlex5-EX series of humidity/moisture and temperature sensors was developed for easy installation in areas where there is a risk of explosion due to dust or gas in the environment.

They were designed to meet the demanding requirements of the oil & gas industry as well as the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food industries, and will be suitable for hazardous applications elsewhere.

The Rotronic HygroFlex5-EX measurement transmitter conforms to the latest international standards.

Locate and Protect

A large American multinational oil and gas corporation, which has been a client of Vismo for a number of years deploys the Vismo App on smartphones devices to monitor and protect employees, executives and expatriates when travelling around the world on business. The company has a strong understanding of its legal and moral obligations towards its global staff and a dynamic appreciation of the risks staff can face.

On 4th August 2020, two major explosions killed more than 200 people at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The disaster was caused by an extensive fire at the port, which spread to the roof of the warehouse where ammonium nitrate was stored. As the news broke across the world, it was crucial for the client to locate and ensure the safety of their travelling employees and expatriates within the Beirut area as soon as possible.

Lone worker protection: alarm notifications with minimal effort

Companies that employ lone workers must ensure their safety at all times. In case of an emergency it must be ensured that help can be called quickly and that the exact location of the worker is known.

Therefore, the experts at ECOM Instruments, a Pepperl+Fuchs brand, have developed the eSENTINEL app. With this app, safety for employees can be significantly increased with little effort. The aim in designing eSENTINEL was to provide users with basic security measures for day-to-day use. It is the ideal tool for lone workers or people working in high-risk situations. A mobile device and the app are all the worker needs. Thanks to low installation effort and acquisition costs, eSENTINEL can be easily integrated into existing company infrastructures.

Safer and Faster Chain Cutting with Enerpac Electric Cutters

Enerpac announces the ECCE-Series Electric Chain Cutters providing a faster, safer and more precise method than cutting with torches, angle grinders and cut-off tools. Capable of cutting 25mm chain in 35 seconds, and up to 16mm chain in just 6 seconds, the portable tools are ideal for cutting high-strength industrial chain.

Until now, chain cutting has typically involved torches, angle grinders and cut-off tools. The introduction of flames, shooting sparks, dust and smoke into the workplace is potentially hazardous, requiring operators to wear specialised PPE, including flame retardant clothing and respirators. The ECCE-Series Electric Chain Cutters provides a safer method of cutting for both the cutter operative and those close by.

High-performance seals for butterfly valves

In order to ensure that process plants meet hygiene requirements, industry-specific approvals and resistance to CIP/SIP media, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed a new series of high-performance seals for butterfly valves. The seals have been developed in conjunction with French customer Definox, one of the leading manufacturers of first class process valves and stainless steel equipment for high-end applications in sectors such as food, beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and animal feed.

Following rigorous tests, 70 EPDM 291 O-rings have already been delivered to Definox, where they have been successfully deployed and demonstrated. Based on this first success, both companies decided to launch a project for the development of new butterfly seals.
