Top turret performance from Abtech’s Nautilus
The Nautilus is an IP68 rated, Ex e terminal enclosure manufactured from marine grade 316 stainless steel.Capable of being submerged to one hundred metres depth, the Nautilus provides a unique solution for maintaining critical electrical connections during periods of temporary submersion whilst ensuring Zone 1 hazardous area protection under normal operating conditions. One specific application for this enclosure is the protection of essential power, instrumentation and lighting connections within an FPSO turret system. When operating in cyclonic regions such as those off the coast of Western Australia, the FPSO may need to be de-mounted from its umbilical system to avoid damage during a severe storm. The vessel can then be at sea for several weeks with the internal turret area partially submerged. Once a cyclone has passed the FPSO can return and the turret successfully mated back to the sub-sea system without the need to rewire critical connections. This allows production to re-commence with a minimal loss of equipment and revenue.
In this example, the Nautilus would be required to maintain its IP68 rating for the whole period, thus the enclosure has been independently tested to maintain ingress protection at fifty metres for two weeks. Further testing achieved one hundred metres of submersion protection for a period of five days. The Nautilus is IECEx and ATEX compliant and is suitable for operation over a -50°C to +55°C ambient temperature range.
