Staff at Mutech Ltd, one of the UK’s leading electronics design and manufacturing companies, put aside their oscilloscopes and soldering irons in favour of hard hats and miner’s lamps when they took part in a team building exercise at the National Coal Mining Museum for England (NCM) based at Overton, near Wakefield.

Mutech’s approach to the corporate team building experience was part of the company’s annual Summer Day Out. (Read More) With the emphasis on fun, they took part in a team discovery trail, working with colleagues to navigate their way around the Museum finding answers to questions on the quiz sheets.
Mutech Managing Director, Colin Cameron, explains: “One of our aims was to further educate Mutech personnel about how our technological expertise plays a vital role in the design and production of electronic sensors and monitoring systems used in the mining industry.
“At the NCM we descended 140m underground to experience life as a miner. We were divided up into three teams to answer questions about this fascinating museum, which charts the history of mining and miners from Victorian times to the present day.
“The problem solving trail quest soon became very competitive with teams building up their knowledge of mining history in general and sensors in action, in particular. More importantly, we all had a good day out.”
Julie Ward, Mutech Assembly Operative, adds: “It was great to see the sensors in the mine and to know that what I produce helps to keep miners safe around the world - and me whilst I was down there!”
Mutech’s visit followed a £2.7 million scheme at the former Caphouse Colliery working mine to extend and revitalise the interactive underground tour and conserve the historic furnace shaft.
The National Coal Mining Museum, which has charitable support from Mutech, preserves the heritage of coal mining in England, attracting thousands of visitors annually from the UK and overseas.
Colin Cameron comments: “The NCM needs to attract donations, sponsorship, legacies and grants to continue to develop and expand. We are committed to helping the organisation keep the history of coal mining alive for future generations.”
