Explosion Proof Fans – Understanding the Detail

To get the specification right for an explosion-proof fan unit, you need to understand both the nature of the hazard and the installation you are planning.

The applications are numerous, and ATEX can affect virtually every industry.

Different ATEX applications

In addition to oil and gas industry applications, examples include: paint shops and spray booths in confined areas, water and sewage companies where methane and other explosive gases are an issue, food processing where dust can build up from flour or sugar and battery storage areas where there is a danger from hydrogen leakage.  From the latter example, it's worth thinking about whether you have several forklifts charging in the same confined space.

The exact specification for venting an area using fans varies and depends on several factors that you need to be aware of. In a whiskey distillery, for example, the fumes tend to sink, so a fan needs to be at a lower level.

Understand your needs

To get the specification right, you need to think through the application.  What zone will the fan unit be operating in, will it be used for gas, dust, or both?  If it's gas, what is its ATEX classification, which will affect the motor enclosure powering the fan, and what class temperature will you require?

You also need to consider the hazard's concentration, the volume of the space that you need to ventilate and the airflow rate that you need to remove or dilute it.  Also, look beyond the fan unit to consider details such as the ducting's size and whether it has any corners or filters that might impede air flowing through it.

To get the specification right, you need to go into detail. It helps to speak to your suppliers, but remember it is your legal duty to ensure compliance.
