DSEAR Lecture Program continues to be a big success

dec-2013-19DSEAR Lecture Program continues to be a big success

Dangerous Substance Control Ltd continues to forge the way in DSEAR training with the latest training and informative lectures being well received at some of the country’s top universities.

This increased interest, follows a well received DSEAR lecture which was presented at the University Health and Safety Association summer conference (UHSA) whereby 18 individual desktop experiments showing how explosive atmospheres are (Read More) formed and triggered, was performed by Dangerous Substance Control Ltd.

Attended by principle fire officers, wardens, and health and safety representatives the conference was designed to raise the awareness of DSEAR in the ever changing laboratory and workshop environment.

Within the last few months, Manchester Metropolitan, Liverpool School of Tropic Medicine and Cardiff University have all received further in depth detailed training on this very complicated subject, helping their staff, both identify DSEAR issues and thus further ensure the safety of our up and coming graduates, post graduated and  laboratory technicians’ alike.

Dangerous Substance Control Ltd believe there are many companies working within the food, manufacturing, aerospace, medical and construction sectors who could benefit from the DSEAR lecture programme, particularly as the HSE identified DSEAR as one of their top three problematic subject areas along side of Stress at Work and Working from height

The big question, DSC-Ltd would ask many companies is: Are you Compliant?

With prosecutions occurring on a regular basis, no company can really afford to be caught out, not just because for some, the potential for fires and explosion is very real, but also because every company has a duty to protect its employees by providing them with a fit, proper and safe working environment.

One thing is for sure, the incorrect storage and handling of Flammable Liquids and Hazardous substances is no laughing matter, especially when someone gets seriously hurt or a fatality occurs.

Danger substance Control Ltd, provides IOSH Accredited and Certified DSEAR awareness training aimed at making all those responsible for Flammable and Hazardous Substances aware of the real dangers associated with their use.

In addition to the basics, such as the Fire Danger triangle, use of Flammables in the work place, ATEX Ex Zoning, dust as an explosive element, methods of correct storage and legal penalties for non-compliance with DSEAR, all lectures and training courses explain in great depth the relationships between:

  • Flash, Auto-ignition and Boiling points,
  • Limits of Flammability
  • Vapour pressures and density
  • And how each of these elements changes when subjected to heat or a fire.

In particular, regulation 8 of the dangerous substance explosive atmosphere regulation asks specifically that consideration must be given to other hazards likely to arise at the time of an accident, incident or emergency. In order to do this it is important to determine what will happen to those chemicals that may be in use, when subjected to a fire, definably the incident.

As example, hydrochloric acid is non flammable, but when substantially raised in temperature such as in a fire, it starts to breakdown into its base elements, one of which is very explosive hydrogen gas.

DSEAR is not just about how to store Dangerous Chemicals, It clearly states requirements for all of the following:

Regulation 4
Details the Duty of Care under the regulation.

Regulation 5
Requires employers to assess risks to employees and others whose safety may be affected by the use or presence of dangerous substances at work.

Regulation 6
Sets out how the risk to safety from dangerous substances should be eliminated or reduced.
Regulation 7
Contains specific requirements to be applied where an explosive atmosphere may be present.

Regulation 8
Requires the provision of arrangements to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies.

Regulation 9
Requires the provision of information, training and instruction on dangerous substances.

Regulation 10
Requires the identification of pipes and containers where these contain dangerous substances.

Regulation 11
Addresses the need to coordinate explosion protection measures where employers share the same workplace.

Don’t get caught out, it is an OFFENCE not to complete a DSEAR Risk assessment, If you or your company use flammable substances of any description.
