Applied Weighing Provides Robust Solution For Harsh Environment
When plunging to depths beyond the region of 2000ft, offshore drilling is undertaken from floating vessels due to the impracticalities of using fixed structures for such operations.
Depending on the depth of the water, the conditions on the seabed and other prevailing factors, a range of mobile offshore drilling units such as jackups, semi-submersibles and drillships are used.
When an offshore services supplier (Read More) recently required new weighing systems on-board a service ship tasked with transporting rock cuttings and other by-products from exploration rigs, they contacted Applied Weighing, the UK’s leading manufacturer of weighing systems, for a solution.
The weighing systems were required to monitor the contents of eleven on-board storage tanks used to hold the by-products ofthe drilling operation. Without the systems, the service supplier faced the associated risks and inefficiencies of over-filling and under-filling the tanks. Hours from shore, the support vessels seek to maximise the productivity of each trip.
The operating environment was such that the systems needed to be ATEX approved and robust enough to withstand transportation between the rigs and shore based processing plants. Consequently, Applied Weighing chose to supply their range of ATEX certified Safemount Loading Assemblies for the eleven tanks.
ATEX approved weight indicators were also provided to allow visual weight monitoring for the operators. Critically, the solution included outputs on each system which were used to signal to the central control system and to stop the storage tanks from filling once they had reached their target weight – utilising the maximum storage capacity of each tank, every time.
Applied Weighing, the leading supplier of process weighing equipment, load cells and load pins for over 20 years, are ISO9001 and ATEX accredited for the design, manufacture & service of industrial weighing equipment. We integrate with DCS/MIS systems, making us your one-stop shop for all Process Weighing requirements.
