3m-june-15Every year thousands of construction workers in the UK suffer or die from respiratory diseases as a result of exposure to hazardous construction dusts and fumes.[1]

Managing and controlling long-term worker exposure to these substances is therefore one of the most important challenges facing the construction industry today. That is why diversified technology company 3M is proud to announce its participation in the 2015 Safety Groups UK and Construction Dust Partnership (CDP) seminar series.

Providing health and safety managers, supervisors, workers and consultants with the latest information and details of innovation in the sector, the two free-of charge seminars will invite attendees to broaden their knowledge of a sometimes overlooked and misunderstood respiratory risk.

The first seminar in the series will be held at the Arco National Distribution Centre in Hull on Wednesday, 8 July and the content will be repeated at a second event taking place at CDP member 3M’s new Customer Innovation Centre in Bracknell, Berkshire on Friday 10 July.
Breathing in construction dusts can lead to a number of major health problems, including lung cancer, silicosis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These occupational illnesses
can have a life changing or even fatal impact, causing those affected to give up work or change their employment. HSE research has estimated that silica may be responsible for the deaths of more than 500 construction workers each year.[2]

Fortunately, many of these risks are entirely preventable. The two seminars will cover the different types of construction dusts and the associated long latency health risks, how and where workers are exposed and an industry Q&A session.

3M will contribute its expertise in respiratory protective equipment (RPE) at the Bracknell seminar by participating in discussions on the selection and correct use of face masks to reduce the chances of workers inhaling harmful substances contaminating the air during high risk tasks. RPE is designed to protect the wearer from breathing in these substances when other controls, such as vacuum extraction, are not possible or not sufficient on their own.

3M is committed to raising awareness of the risks posed by harmful construction dusts. It recently hosted a Safety Spotlight webinar with a focus on the role RPE can play in helping to tackle the dangers of workplace dust.

Jenn Raymond, senior marketing executive at 3M, said: “Construction dust is more than just a nuisance, it can cause serious and irreversible damage to workers’ lives. We are very proud to be working alongside the CDP and Safety Groups UK to help reduce the number of construction workers unnecessarily suffering and dying from preventable respiratory diseases.”
